What is Intellectual Property?Intellectual Property (“
IP”) is the term used to describe a collection of legal property rights relating to creations of the human mind. The owners of these rights are granted exclusivity in the use and exploitation of their creations for a
specified term.
Intellectual property rights can be subdivided into two broad categories:
industrial property, such as patents to protect inventions,
designs to protect the aesthetic appearance of industrial
products, trade marks and geographical indications of origin;
copyright, which protects literary, dramatic, musical and
artistic works.
Most countries have their own laws to protect IP and, in the case of industrial property, it is normally necessary to obtain protection for your rights in each country where protection is required. Consequently, it is also possible to have different owners of the same or similar IP rights in different countries.
Montana iP specialises in providing trade mark and design protection for its clients and advising on copyright protection. Some basic information about the main types of IP can be found via the links to the right. This is provided for general information only and you should
